I haven't read all the comments, so I hope I'm not repeating. What about the ability to pass on a favorite to a loved one with a sentimental handwritten note inside the front cover. How about personalizing with beautiful bookplates and of course collecting wonderful, artful, handcrafted TANGIBLE bookmarks. I feel like crying to think of the coldness e-reading leaves us with. Useful? Yes, but at a tremendous loss. Imagine someone giving up their Steinway for the sake of being able to play a Mozart sonata by pressing micro-keys on a condensed electronic piano that would fit in a purse? Let the e-readers have their convenience. Please let the rest of us keep our paper and ink. It's personal. Sheila

3 years. Ouch!

Indeed the challenge of surrounding yourself with positivity is a constant one. I find that sometimes "positive" people enter my life only to turn out the biggest problem.

Thanks for the comment, Gayla!

I've found myself in very similar situations. I try to surround myself with all things positive - from vision boards to uplifting music/television throughout the day versus a continual feed of negative news. Still, negative people find their way into my life - where I feel I'm constantly treading water to keep from being sucked under.

A few years ago I had to tell a close friend I could not be friends anymore. Our break took 3 years and we recently reunited with a new sense of respect for each others boundaries.

When 'necessary' I strive to be a likable antagonist. One technique I do use is to ask questions in a manner that is percieved to pass judgement. "Do you wear that out in public?" I like to let peoples' imaginations and insecurities about themselves do the dirty work for me. It's kind of like a slow acting poison, and I can claim innocence. After all, there's no sense in losing friends over something like this. Who would I have left to antagonize?

Great advice, MaryMoses!

So sorry about your friend. I hope you've had time since then to think fondly of her and say your goodbyes.

It is sometimes hard to realize things before a meltdown, but if you can keep reviewing your internal parameters periodically, you should be fine.

Unless, of course, you don't have time to review your parameters.

*sigh*

I once was involved in church activities. Was the office secretary, the cleaning lady, the head of Children's Dept and also the Adult Ed. Dept. On, and I played the organ for one of the services. My plate was full, and one evening with the teenagers swarming around during a class, I heard of the death of a dear friend. I could not even mourn...didn't have the time. Meltdown. The next day I resigned from everything just to see what I would be doing if I didn't do these jobs. Two were paid and the rest were volunteer. That was a major reset. I did find out and I have since fixed my parameters where I want and need them. Don't wait for a meltdown. Do it before the bottom drops out.
