At some point we all think, “I can’t do that – it’s beneath me.” We end up doing it, and being a better person for it.
Yesterday, I did the opposite – I did something above me.
I watched five episodes of Deadwood.
It is beautifully written and artful. I am compelled to continue watching. And still, at the end of a viewing, I feel like I’ve completely missed the boat on understanding the English language.
For reasons I can’t even begin to figure, I love that feeling.
Try doing something “above you.” Do something that is so challenging that you don’t even know if you are qualified, good enough or can understand it.
You may not have to reach too far. What you choose could be as simple as watching a TV show.
What will you choose? Please share it in the comments.

I’m taking a senior level history class specific to the Crusades. Why it’s above me: 1) I wasn’t a history major in college so other than the requirements of US history, and TX and US govt, I have no other experience/exposure in the realm of continuing education. 2) while I’m technically a senior since I’m done, I’m not sure that this qualifies me to take a senior level history class. 3) I’m really taking it to get face time with the prof so I can get written permission to take a higher level, more specialized class in the Spring. And this all ultimately stems from the fact that I was bored.
Wow, FeatherHead.
Some questions:
1) What major are you?
2) Have you asked the prof if you could take the other class or are you assuming that he would right off the bat say no to the other class?
Fun that you’ve taken the challenge. Comments for this will be open for a while, so write back and let us know how much above you it was (or if it turned out not to be).
