This is the second in a series. Find #1 here and #3 here.

How do you find the perfect gift? Observe the receiver for a while. Learn passions and desires, hobbies and sports, and all things that make him or her happy.

Yesterday I teased about a list of questions to help you do this. No more teasing…

What does she talk about?

Don’t just listen to what she says for the information. Keep your ears perked for things that make her excited.

What does he do for fun?

Does he have a hobby or a passion? Gifts surrounding passions and hobbies always hit a nerve.

What magazines does she read?

This one makes things easy. If you see magazines around her home that she reads, go buy one and read it. This will give you insight into her thinking (and what she loves).

What does he wear?

Tailored shirts with monogrammed french cuffs will tell you a lot. Is he a ball cap person or a suit-n-tie guy? For the women – are they part of the fashion police or happy in flip-flops and a t-shirt?

What does he look at online?

Like magazines, this gives special insight. While at his house, ask to check your email because you “are expecting an important document” and then peek at the history. (Mention the document saying it would be easier to view on a computer than on a smart phone.)

What TV shows or movie genres does she like?

Come out and ask this one. You might be surprised – expecting “chick flicks,” she might just answer, “gory suspense.”

What books does he read?

Peek at the bookshelves but also look for current reading material (if you can look at what’s on the nightstand, do it). You can also mention what you are reading and then ask, “So, what are you reading these days?”

Find your people, do some investigating and post curious things in the comments.

Tomorrow I’ll post tips on how to use the answers to these questions.

    Hey, nice list!
I always wonder what to offer people.
Though I don’t think they’d like me sneaking around in their history. I wouldn’t.

Indeed, it might be that sneaking around in the history is something reserved for very close (VERY close) friends. Of course if they are that close, then perhaps you already know them well enough to buy them a gift.

How about this: “If they never know, they’ll never know.”

      Don’t get caught.
